Finally went to poetry slam with Anielia. She had been inviting me since forever. Lasted from 8 to around 11 pm. She drove me to Yorkdale and we had a talk. She ended up bawling at one point. After I left her car, this is what happened:
"I'm finally home after a terrible mishap. I caught the 12:45 GO bus from Yorkdale but foolishly fell asleep on it, lying down on the back seats, and ended up in Ajax. I got off the bus at the Ajax GO station. Felt a numb kind of frustration. It was 1:35. Then I saw all those texts from you, and saw that the last one had come just a few minutes earlier. I had missed them while waiting at Yorkdale and riding the bus cuz my phone was on silent and I assumed you went to sleep. I'm so sorry. I screwed us both. After getting off, I walked back towards Pickering for almost an hour, I think. I thought of looking for a taxi but there were hardly any around. I texted my father who lives in Ajax and asked if he was up. He replied that he was at work. Then I asked him for a number for a taxi and he gave me one. I called and got a taxi back to my house, which was a five minute ride. Going to sleep now. I'm sorry I didn't see you on my day off. I missed you. Sorry for worrying you. I love you."

Today we went to a big mall, supposedly the biggest in the country, in a maxi taxi. I bought two pairs of payless shoes. There was a big selection for my size. Then we made a stopover at a grocery store. Back at the house, I spent most of my time watching a South Park marathon. Ian said he was really lonely today at work. After work we exchanged messages. He popped an ecstasy pill, watched our porn and jacked off. He was crazy horny for me. Then he went to a Jays game.

Yesterday I went to church. There was a lot of singing, to the tune of steel pan and bass guitar. There were a few baptisms and a special event in which Crusaders were initiated and promoted. Later on Glenn's sister came to the house and I met her for the first time. She dropped a bombshell: that Glenn and his wife would also be flying in tomorrow (today). Later on, a family friend named Doreen drove us around. First we went to a place with a great view and bought sweetcorn and other snacks. Mommy bought some trinkets. Then Doreen drove us around Port of Spain in the evening.

On the day of our departure, prompted by the question of whether Ian's parents liked me, I opened up to Mommy about my issues with Ian's family. It was at St. Louis by Anime North, where we were taken for drinks. It was strange to see the Anime North crowd on the way to the airport, being the first time since 2004 that I wasn't attending. Well, except for that one year where Omar and I missed it.

If your astrological sign has changed, do you think your personality more resembles your current or past sign?

OMG, I stopped believing in astrology and all other millennia-old superstition a long time ago, but my new sign almost makes me a believer once again.  I always knew that my personality wasn't at all like an Aries.  Finding out that I'm actually a Pisces is like a long-awaited self-discovery: that sign fits me to a tee!

I've also discovered that, even though this alternate astrological system only made the news in recent months, it's almost as old as the original system!

Mind you, it's still just a myth, IMHO.  Astronomy is the real deal. ^_^;

I don't follow comics, though they do interest me, and I would support this.

Cross-posted to boost the signal.

A campaign has been launched to bring Cassandra Cain back back fulltime to the DC Comics universe and we need your help.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the character, Cassandra Cain served as the titular heroine of the first ongoing Batgirl comic book series. Of Asian descent, she is also the first non-white member of the Batman family and has remained one of the most prominent non-white superheroes, with a massive following from a wide demographic of fans.

But more than that, Cass is a groundbreaking character because her success is based primarily on the fact that she is handled with the same care and respectability that’s usually reserved for cis straight white male protagonists.

She debuted in April 2000, at #23 on the sales chart list, selling nearly 50,000 books. ( http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/2000/2000-04.html) Her title averaged around 25,000 in sales and her final issue in Feb. 2006 sold more than 26,000 copies (http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/2006/2006-02.html), which is more than the current Batgirl title is selling. In fact she's outsold legacy characters such as Green Arrow and Aquaman.

However despite the overwhelming success that she's brought DC, Cass has been another casualty of the ongoing trend of racefail and erasure of characters of color from the DC Universe. She was repeatedly on the receiving end of shoddy storylines, absurd mangled characterizations and was summarily dismissed and written off while less successful characters have been privileged with reboot after reboot.

There's an online petition asking for the return of Cassandra Cain.

Why does this matter? Because exceptional characters shouldn't be eliminated simply because they're a minority. Why does this matter? Because women, POCs, LGBTQs, etc. deserve to be showcased and celebrated just as much as cis straight white protagonists. The truth is we desperately need more Cassandra Cains, Storms, Renee Montoyas, Black Panthers, Wiccans, Midnighters. It’s not acceptable for us to be a supporting sidekick or background dressing, it’s time for us to take center stage.

And we're asking you to help us show DC why diversity matters and why Cass Cain Counts.

“Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here. Bold those books you’ve read in their entirety, italicize the ones you've partially read.”Collapse )

I miss being a bookworm.

I hope I find my social insurance card by Friday :( Found it the next day! Phew.

If you could change the title of one published book, which book would you choose, and what would the new title be?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to Harry Potter and the Author's Killing Spree.

Yeah...this is last year's Anime North report.  I first posted this incomplete two days before the 2010 event, the day before I went to its pre-registration check-in.  Now I've finally edited it to completion, with pics, video, and a karaoke story.  And I will work on this year's report...before the year is up! XD;;;
  • Pics!
  • I shared a room in a nearby hotel with a good friend from the uni anime club.
  • I had a good talk with that friend and found that we understand each other very much.  We were having the same problems at uni, and she told me she took medication for social anxiety, which got me interested in trying it myself.
  • I went with her to the "Gay Sex 101" panel (Uh huh.  It was in the yaoi section of the convention) and kept falling asleep, 'cause it had been a long day.
  • I half-jokingly suggested to my brother that he attend the hentai panel, and then I followed him in without thinking.  Not only that, but I naively didn't expect pics and video to be shown, 'cause all of the other panels I'd attended were pure discussion (including the gay sex panel)!  Well, it was more than a little embarrassing, but also quite funny.  And unfortunately we had to leave early (ha!) to go to karaoke.
  • Karaoke was awesome.
  • One of our favourite Japanese voice actors, Noboyuki Hiyama, was a celebrity guest at the con, and we watched his Q&A session.
     Unfortunately, we missed out on his autograph session.  I wanted him to sign my Bleach and Saiunkoku Monogatari artbooks, and my copy of the Sensitive Pornograph manga!  And, uh, funny story: I'd forgotten to bring those books with me, so I called my mom and asked her to bring them--yes, all of them.  I hope she's forgotten about that. ^^;;;;;
  • I went to a panel on otome videogames (female-targeted romance) and contributed more to the discussion than anyone else in the audience!  Though I'd played very few of the games I mentioned ^_^;
  • Once again, I watched my brother win at Anime Name That Tune.  The prize was a Vol. 1 DVD of My-Hime, in a collector's box with a cell phone charm.
  • There was a room with Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA, Stepmania, and In The Groove.

    I played Stepmania and danced to the first opening to Darker Than Black, and the opening to Air Gear.  Those songs, respectively, were "Howling" by abingdon boys school and "Chain" by BACK-ON.  I really wanted to play DDR SuperNOVA too but the waiting list was too long T_T

Friday Night Karaoke!Collapse )
